Permanent Laser Hair Removal in Zurich
Shaving, epilating, waxing, and starting all over again: anyone who wants smooth skin knows the routine. And its half-life. The razor in the bathroom, the waxing appointment, the pulling afterwards. After three days, the first stubble appears, and after a week, everything starts anew. Laser hair removal starts one step earlier: directly at the hair root.
The principle is quickly explained. The diode laser sends short light pulses into the skin. The melanin in the hair (i.e., the pigment that gives it its color) absorbs this energy and transmits it as heat to the follicle. There, the hair root is cauterized, the hair falls out, and does not grow back. The more melanin a hair contains, the better the laser hits its target: dark hair on light skin is the ideal case.

Why isn't one session enough?
Because your hair doesn't grow in sync. Each hair follows its own cycle, and only in the growth phase (technical term: anagen phase) is it firmly connected to the root. Only then can the laser be effective. However, at any given time, only 20 to 30 percent of your hair is in this phase. The rest is resting.
This is precisely why permanent hair removal requires several attempts: with each treatment, the laser catches a new group of hairs in the middle of their growth phase. Session by session, the area becomes sparser. Laser treatment is therefore a series, not a single appointment. What remains is usually fine, light fuzz. Hardly anyone but you will notice it.

Frequently Asked Questions about Laser Hair Removal
Does it hurt?
Honestly: it's not entirely without sensation. Most describe the laser pulse as a brief sting, like a rubber band snapping against the skin. The pain remains well-tolerable because the integrated cooling of the handpiece and a cooling gel immediately dissipate the heat. Sensitive areas like the bikini line feel more than the lower legs. Of course. After a few pulses, you'll know what to expect.
How do I prepare?
Shave the area approximately 24 hours before the appointment. Pluck or wax? Please don't, as the laser needs the hair root as a target. Avoid intense sun exposure in the two weeks prior and leave self-tanner in the cabinet: both increase pigment in the skin and divert energy from the hair.
Can I have laser treatment all year round?
Yes. And that's not a given. Older laser systems required months of sun breaks; laser treatment was purely a winter project. The diode laser at Metropolitan Clinic works with wavelengths and cooling that also allow for lightly tanned skin. So, hair removal without a summer break: you can start in June and go to the lake in August. (Sun protection on treated areas is still necessary, though.)
What happens afterwards?
Not much. And that's the good news. Immediately after the treatment, slight redness around the follicles is normal; it usually disappears within a few hours, and cooling speeds this up. For the first two days: no sauna, no strenuous exercise, no direct sunbathing. The hairs targeted by the laser will fall out on their own over the next two to three weeks. Laser hair removal requires no further aftercare.
Who is laser hair removal suitable for?
For most people. The combination of dark hair and light skin responds best, as the contrast makes the laser's job easier. However, current devices also reliably treat darker skin types and tanned skin. The method finds its limit where melanin is absent: white, grey, or red hairs respond poorly, as do very light blonde hairs.
We advise against it during pregnancy, with fresh skin inflammations, or when taking photosensitizing medications. We will clarify your skin type, hair color, and what that means for the laser settings beforehand.
