What is botulinum toxin A?

Botulinum toxin A, also known under the trade name "Botox" or abbreviated to "BTX", is a well-researched neuromodulator that has been used successfully for many years in aesthetic medicine as well as in certain medical specialties.

It is a prescription medicine that specifically reduces the activity of certain mimic muscles - precisely, locally and for a limited period of time. The muscular relaxation leads to the overlying skin becoming smoother. In this way, wrinkles caused by facial expressions can be visibly reduced, for example on the forehead, around the eyes or between the eyebrows.

Thanks to the finely dosed application by experienced doctors, the result looks natural and individually tailored - without making the facial expression appear rigid or unnatural.

Botulinum toxin A is not only used to treat wrinkles, but also for certain functional complaints with a muscular cause. By specifically relaxing overactive muscles, botulinum toxin A can help to alleviate symptoms such as chronic headaches, night-time teeth grinding or excessive sweating. In these cases, treatment is always carried out under medical supervision and is based on individual complaints and findings.

  • When does BTX take effect and how long does it last?

    After treatment with botulinum toxin A, the effect usually begins within 3 to 5 days. The final result is visible after around 10 to 14 days. How long the effect lasts depends on various factors - including the treated region, individual muscle activity and personal metabolism.
    On average, the duration of effect is 3 to 6 months. After that, muscle activity can gradually return. With regular use, the duration of effect can be extended, as the muscles develop less due to repeated relaxation.

  • Is the result natural or do you no longer have facial expressions?

    A frequently expressed wish is that treatment with botulinum toxin A should appear natural and inconspicuous. When professionally applied by experienced doctors, individual facial expressions are preserved and only certain muscle groups are specifically relaxed.

  • Are there any risks or side effects with BTX treatment?

    As with any medical treatment, the use of botulinum toxin A can also lead to temporary side effects. These often include slight redness, swelling or small bruises at the injection sites - these usually subside within a few hours or days.
