Hair Transplantation Methods

In general, there are these hair transplant methods:

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction):

Single hair follicle extraction of 1–5 associated roots

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation):

Strip extraction from the back of the head

Implanter Pen Hair Transplantation:

Hair follicles are inserted into the scalp directly after extraction using an Implanter Pen

As natural results as possible

In Zurich, we rely on the FUE method and DHI technique, which enable natural results without noticeable scars on the back of the head.

Depending on the extent of hair loss, the required number of hairs is estimated. Using the Hamilton-Norwood scale, we can classify patients into different stages and thus determine the time and cost requirements.

Our Methods

FUE Method (Follicular Unit Extraction)

  • Advantages: No visible scars, precise extraction of individual hair follicles.
  • Procedure: Consultation, preparation, extraction of hair follicles, opening of channels in the recipient area, and implantation.
  • Results: Natural hair growth, final result after 9–12 months.

With the FUE method (single hair transplantation), no visible scars are created because the hair follicles are extracted individually. In contrast, the FUT method (strip extraction) leaves a clearly visible scar on the back of the head.

Implanter Pen Hair Transplantation

  • Features: Hair follicles are inserted into the scalp directly after extraction using a CHIO pen, without prior opening of channels.
  • Advantages: Shorter healing time, maximum precision, natural hairline.
  • Particularly suitable: For smaller procedures or shaping the hairline.

The Implanter Pen hair transplantation is a modern method of hair transplantation that offers a precise and gentle approach. Here, hair follicles are implanted directly into the scalp using a special instrument, the so-called Implanter Pen, without the need to open channels beforehand.

Advantages:

  • Shorter treatment and healing time.
  • Natural results through precise placement.
  • Ideal for smaller procedures or finer work such as shaping the hairline.
Features of Implanter Pen Hair Transplantation+

Direct Insertion: Hair follicles are implanted into the recipient area immediately after extraction.

Implanter Pen: A special tool that allows control over the depth, direction, and angle of hair growth.

Minimal Stress: Since no channels are opened beforehand, the surrounding tissue is less stressed, which can accelerate healing.

Highest Precision: The method allows for a particularly dense and natural placement of the hairs.

Duration of Procedure

4–12 hours, possibly spread over 2 days

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia

Before the Procedure

Shave hair 2–3 days beforehand after consultation

Downtime

Minimal, ready for use again after a few days

Final Result Visible

Visible after 9–12 months

After the Procedure

Alternative & Complementary Treatments

Nanofat (Crushed Autologous Fat)

Nanofat is a method in which the body's own fatty tissue is extracted, processed, and brought into a fine, crushed form.

This processed fat contains valuable growth factors and regenerative cells that can be used in aesthetic medicine. In hair transplantations, nanofat can help to revitalize the scalp, regenerate tissue, and promote hair growth.

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

PRP stands for 'Platelet-Rich Plasma' and is a technique in which the patient's blood is processed to isolate the platelet-rich component.

This contains growth factors that promote cell regeneration and wound healing.

  • With Stem Cells from FUE: Here, PRP is combined with stem cells from the extracted hair follicle material to enhance the regenerative effects.
  • Without Stem Cells: PRP is used alone and injected into the scalp to promote blood circulation and stimulate hair follicles.

Both procedures serve to improve the results of a hair transplantation and to sustainably support hair growth.

The Procedure of the FUE Method (Follicular Unit Extraction)

  1. Consultation

The doctor examines the hair status and creates an individual treatment plan, including the number of grafts required. A transparent cost estimate is provided, and detailed preparation instructions are given.

  2. Preparation

The donor and recipient areas are shaved after consultation. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, making it painless.

  3. Hair Follicle Extraction

The hair follicles are individually extracted from the donor area (usually at the back of the head) using special instruments and prepared directly for transplantation.

  4. Preparation of the Recipient Area

Fine channels are opened in the bald or thinning area. The alignment of the channels is designed to ensure natural growth.

  5. Transplantation

The extracted hair follicles are individually inserted into the prepared channels. Attention is paid to aesthetic density and arrangement.

  6. Completion and Aftercare

After the treatment, a follow-up examination is performed. Care instructions for the first few days and weeks are provided. A follow-up appointment is conducted after two days to monitor the healing process.

Procedure of Implanter Pen Hair Transplantation

  1. Consultation

The doctor examines your hair loss and creates an individual treatment plan, including the required number of grafts and a cost estimate.

  2. Preparation

The donor and recipient areas are shaved if necessary. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia for maximum comfort.

  3. Hair Follicle Extraction

The hair follicles are individually extracted from the donor area and immediately prepared for implantation.

  4. Direct Implantation

The hair follicles are inserted directly and precisely into the recipient area using an Implanter Pen, without opening channels beforehand.

  5. Completion and Aftercare

After the procedure, an initial check-up is performed and care instructions are provided. A further follow-up examination takes place two days later.

Frequently Asked Questions

The transplanted hairs are usually permanent, as they are taken from areas less susceptible to hair loss.

Yes, there are medicinal treatments and regenerative methods such as PRP or nanofat that can stimulate hair growth.

That depends on your individual needs.

While the FUE method is suitable for larger procedures, the DHI technique is ideal for smaller areas and particularly precise hairline design.

Generally, you are after a few days able to resume social activities. Slight redness or swelling may occur but subsides quickly.

Avoid intense physical exertion such as sports for about 2 weeks.

Thanks to local anesthesia, the procedure is largely painless.

After the anesthesia wears off, slight pain may occur, but it is well manageable with common painkillers.

With FUE and Implanter Pen hair transplantation, no visible scars are created.

With the FUT method, a clear scar remains on the back of the head.
