Lipoedema: Visible, painful - and finally in focus

Plastic surgeon Christian Roessing in an interview with Blick.ch about myths, diagnoses and modern treatment options

The topic of lipoedema is increasingly becoming the focus of public attention - and that's a good thing. In a recent article on the Swiss news portal Blick.ch ("Women share their experiences on social media - doctor dispels lipoedema myths"), sufferers speak openly about their symptoms and the long struggle to get a correct diagnosis.
One of the experts in the article: Christian Roessing, specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery at the Metropolitan Clinic.

"80 percent of my patients who come with a suspicion really do have lipoedema."

With this statement, Christian Roessing emphasizes in the Blick interview how common the disease actually is - and how great the need for expert information is. Many women spend a long time looking for answers. They often hear that they just need to lose weight - but lipoedema is not a purely aesthetic or weight-related issue.

What is lipedema?

Lipoedema is a chronic fat distribution disorder that almost exclusively affects women. It is characterized by symmetrical fat deposits on the legs, arms or hips, combined with pressure pain, a feeling of swelling and a tendency to bruising. It is often triggered by hormonal changes - for example during puberty, after pregnancy or during the menopause.

"Many patients don't feel they are taken seriously for a long time"

Plastic surgeon Christian Roessing also points this out in the article. Too often, complaints are trivialized or wrongly classified as obesity. However, an early, well-founded diagnosis is crucial to prevent the condition from worsening. "Many patients don't feel they are taken seriously for a long time," he says in an interview with Blick.ch - and gets to the heart of what many sufferers experience.
